Maris, Ferol, David and all,

Hello and welcome! It's so good to have you here!

I apologize for not responding sooner. I'm one of the Administrators here and I thought that I had my settings to where I'd receive an email confirmation when anyone makes a new post. Well--I just (and I mean just!) realized that I forgot to update my profile here...so all notifications were going to my old email address!  Shocked D'oh!

So I'll have to go change my profile after I type this...  Grin

And here all this time I didn't think anyone was visiting this board... *chuckle*

Maris! Hi! If all goes well, I plan on coming to the 2008 Studio. I told my husband just the other day "We're going next year, OK? I'm serious. Just so you know." He laughed.  Grin So I'm going to be tucking $ away so we can go to a Broadway show and do some sightseeing, too. (My maniacal plan is to be in NYC for a week...but we'll see. Of course, hubby doesn't know that part of the plan... *insert evil cackle here*)

Hi -

My name is Maris.  Im finally getting a chance to catch up on all the news and message boards!  How kewl!  Very kewl to see you here Janet, I love your website and even had you do a reading for me about a year or so ago!  I was hoping you would be at the Reader's Studio..?  Its great to see many classmates from Wednesday night as well as some new friends from the Studio as well!

To answer your questions:

1. What are your favorite Tarot and Oracle decks?  My favorite deck is the Quest deck by Joseph Ernest Martin, I just love it.  My favorite Oracle deck is The Guardians of Wisdom, which I picked up at the Readers Studio and have been working with them since I got home and I LOVE THEM.

2. What are your favorite books, Tarot or otherwise?  My favorite tarot book over the last few weeks has been Kabbalistic Tarot by Dovid Krafchow, and Ive also gotten into Tarot Talismans by Chic Cicero and Sandra Tabatha Cicero.

My favorite book of all time, though, is The Giver by Lois Lowry

3. What piqued your interest in Tarot?  I didnt find Tarot as much as Tarot found me, and its kept my interest all these years, which is not an easy thing to do..lol.. because Tarot is so dynamic and every time you think you have mastered one side of it, another side opens, its a never-ending passion.

4. What are some of your hobbies or ways you enjoy relaxing?  Tarot is a hobby which I engage in frequently.  I enjoy spending a lot of time with my yorkie Gremlin, I read, i love to travel.

Hi Janet,
Good to meet you via cyberspace.
I live in San Carlos, CA. Have been here in this house for 43 years (gives you some idea of my ancientude!) and taught High School math and science for 35 years in a public school and 8 more years in a private parochial school. During these years my interest in Tarot developed  through a study of Numerology. I studied with Pamela Eakins in Half Moon Bay California as we explored the "Fool's Journey" as course on Tarot and the "Fool's Wedding" a course on the Tree of Life. After several years of work with Pamela Eakins I became certified as a Tarot reader in her school, The Pacific Center.  I've been reading Tarot in a local metaphysical bookstore for over 10 years and teach ongoing Tarot classes.

My favorite decks are the "Tarot of the Spirit" a deck by Pamela and Joyce Eakins; the RWS deck and the various clones. I particularly enjoy the Gilded Tarot

I've read, am reading, many Tarot books and Rachel Pollacks, "The Forest of Souls" was amazing. I like Mary Greer's works and Wald and RuthAnn's "Tarot Tips."  I working through the companion book to the Victorian Tarot and enjoying that to date.

What piqued my interest in Tarot was my study of Numerology and a referral to the Tree of Life in one of the books I was reading at the time, over 30 years ago! That led me to an exploration of Kabbalah classes in my area and led me to the Pacific Center where I started my studies in Tarot. At present I'm in the Amberstone's Telecourse and enjoying the class material and the wonderful people who are members of the class.

Don't want to ramble here, but I 'm glad to find this messsage board and the ability to connect with people of like mind.

1. What are your favorite Tarot and Oracle decks?

The Victorian Romantic Tarot by Karen Mahony & Alex Ukolov
The Playing Card Oracles by Ana Cortez & C.J. Freeman

2. What are your favorite books, Tarot or otherwise?

Currently, I'm reading "Tarot Outside the Box" by Valerie Sim and enjoying it thoroughly.  I have dozens of Tarot-related books, but if I had to choose one, it would be "Mary K. Greer's 21 Ways to Read a Tarot Card".

3. What piqued your interest in Tarot?

I don't know for certain -- I should do a reading & find out!  I remember being interested in divination by cards even before I started to read (which was over 50 years ago), but I cannot remember what sparked the interest.  Everyone in my mother's family played cards whenever they got together, and I think one of my aunts or uncles (or their spouses) must have told me about using cards to tell the future.  I can't imagine how I would have gotten the idea otherwise.  In spite of the interest, I only played with Tarot briefly, off and on, during the intervening 50 years.  Then I buckled down about five years ago and decided that I could and would become a really good Tarot reader.  Better late than never, right?  Grin

4. What are some of your hobbies or ways you enjoy relaxing?

My name is Madame Finestra, and I'm a Tarotholic.  Seriously, I've been searching for the perfect deck for five years, and I have at least 150 squirreled away throughout my house right now.  This year, I'm not collecting.  Instead, I've enrolled in the Tarot School's correspondence course, and I'll be immersing myself in the parts of Tarot I really love -- studying and readng!  In addition to Tarot, I enjoy caring for the animals, who live with me  I have two guinea pigs, dwelling in a huge cage in the living room (it's a long story...), three black cats, a rat terrier, and a cairn terrier.  I also like to sew and crochet.

Thank you, Janet & everyone -- I'm really glad to be here!

Here's wishing you & yours a Happy New Year!!!

Hi Janet!

And hello to everyone else, too~

I agree with you about Ruth Ann and Wald.  I got into their Teleclasses on Wednesday nights recently and I have really been having a ball.  I read intuitively and have not had time to study and learn the many, many, many things that RAWA can teach us all.  I have found their classes endlessly fascinating and useful in my daily life an in Tarot in general.  I teach all the time, and run the Living Tarot Meetup in Dallas Texas, so I am a busy gal, like many of you.

My favorite deck is the Universal Waite, but I also love the Maat, the Kingdom Highway, Mary-El Tarot, Major Tom's Tarot de Marseilles, the Fey Tarot, Lunatic Tarot, the Navigators Tarot of the Mystic SEA by Julia A. Turk, the Llewellyn Tarot, and the Tarot of Secrets.  I have about fifty decks, which is NOTHING compared to most of the rest of the Tarot nuts I see on Aeclectic and Tarot for Life and other wonderful internet boards.

Hi RC and Ceal!

And for you, Janet, I am tickled to find you out here.  What a treat.  I hope I can visit often!

1. What are your favorite Tarot and Oracle decks?

Used to be "married" to Scapini Medieval, but glad the class switched me to Universal Waite.

2. What are your favorite books, Tarot or otherwise?

Pictorial Key to the Tarot is pedantic and dense, but since it was written by Waite I find it gives a little extra insight into that deck.

3. What piqued your interest in Tarot?

Its usefulness in divination as well as self-reflection.

4. What are some of your hobbies or ways you enjoy relaxing?

Genealogy, movies, snake charming (learning, but very difficult).  Taking care of my two cats Cassandra and Barrabas, and Jasper the snake.

Greetings!  My name is Gloria Jean.  I thought I had sent an introduction before, but who knows where it ended up?!  ha!

I'm 50 years old with 2 grown sons and 2 grandsons.  I am a triple Pisces, originally from New Orleans of Mexican and Irish ancestry.  I was raised in a typical religious southern environment, then grew up and got busy with family and life.  At 20 my husband and I moved to California.  At 35 I started feeling the pull back to spirituality, and it has been quite a journey.  Along the way, I discovered Tarot.  At first I remember saying "no way would I ever tell people any of that stuff," and here I am now giving readings as much as I can!  It has become my life's passion.  I recently quit a very nice job in a law firm as a legal secretary to pursue my true purpose, and Tarot is a big part of that purpose.  I had thought about taking the Tarot course for years and this year decided to go for it.

I seem to change decks about every year so as not to get bored.  Right now I've been using the Gilded Tarot.  I love the jeweled images!  To me it's very magickal, and that speaks to me deeply.  I am a practicing Pagan, and I would classify myself as Eclectic.  I am very drawn to the Mediterranean mythologies, as well as the African and Native spirituality.  I combine this to create a unique form of worship - very blended, as is the city of New Orleans.

I love animals and have dogs and birds.  I currently live in Northern California, which is a beautiful area with wonderful weather.  All the reading I do is of a spiritual nature of one kind or another.  I don't watch much TV as this takes away reading time.

I am seriously considering upgrading to the degree program, as I feel I need to be the best reader that I can be!  I hope to see much discussion on this site.  Thank you for promoting this wonderful path!

Hello to everyone,
I'm a new member and am taking the course, and am new to tarot.  I am still immersed in learning the Universal Waite deck.
I have a stack of books by my bed and the very first book I read was "78 Degrees of Wisdom", then the Tarot Tips, and everything by Mary Greer I can find.
I began looking at the cards when I was in my 20's, and then 4 kids later, started dreaming about the cards again.  I'm a semi-retired social worker, presently doing part-time contract work, and  learning Tarot has enhanced my social work skills.  For relaxation I love to read, knit and work in my garden. We live in North Carolina and grow a lot of flowers and vegetables. I once had a wonderful horse, and am fascinated by the horses in the Universal Waite deck. My kids are ages 9 , 14, 21 and 23, and with the youngest two I am still involved in school activities.
I am very happy to be learning again and very much looking forward to getting to know y'all.

Hello everyone! I'm a new member...My name is Michelle, but my nickname is Mishka, and you can feel free to call me either.

I initially began working with tarot cards when I was in my late teens, but didn't continue on with it for several reasons, including a lack of awareness that tarot couldn't be learned over night. About a year ago, my interest in tarot was re-awakened, and I began to study tarot again, more seriously this time. I consider my tarot knowledge to be at an intermediate level, certainly nowhere near an expert. I'm starting to be interested in more advanced techniques, like the comparative method, and I think this is moving me forward.

I'm a university professor in California, and I teach and do research in psychology. Not surprisingly, given that, one of the aspects of tarot that fascinates me most is the potential for tapping into the subconscious through imagery. I tend to be a very analytical, literal thinker, and working with tarot has really helped me get out of that trap, and get in touch with a more intuitive side of myself, and has resulted in more balance.

I loved 'Tarot Tips'; reading other people's questions and answers helped me to expand my thinking about tarot, so I joined the Tarot Tips group, and this discussion board. I'm looking forward to talking with you all!

Okay, here are my answers to the general questions:

1. What are your favorite Tarot and Oracle decks?

Oh, so hard to pick! I have several favorite decks depending on my mood, or the issue I'm dealing with. For any professional issues, I turn to Secret Tarot. For personal growth or relationship issues, I usually go with the Golden Tarot. Some of my most used decks, however, are Morgan-Greer and Robin Wood. And untimately, when I'm learning a new technique or trying to reinforce something I'm having difficulty with, I always go back to the deck I started with--Universal Waite.

I recently bought the Comparative Tarot, and am looking forward to learning that technique. And I just managed to find an out-of-print Tarot of the Cloisters, which is a round deck, and am looking forward to exploring not just upright and reversed, but degrees of the continuum between the two using the round deck for that purpose.

2. What are your favorite books, Tarot or otherwise?

Tarot For Yourself is wonderful; I've found Learning Tarot Reversals to be really helpful; And of course, Tarot Tips has been one of the very best books I've found.

3. What piqued your interest in Tarot?

The book that reawakened my interest in tarot was Margaret Starbird's book on Magdalene imagery in the tarot trumps (I came across this after beginning to research the Magdalene-Grail connection after reading The DaVinci Code). It was an interesting exploration of one story that might be present in the trump cards, and while I'm still agnostic about her claims, it got me thinking about the symbolism, archetypes, and stories that the trumps and the other tarot cards contain. I find that I don't work effectively with decks that have unillustrated 'pips'; I need imagery associated with each card in order to tap into a reading. Maybe that will change as I become more advanced in my tarot studies.

4. What are some of your hobbies or ways you enjoy relaxing?

I love to read, and I love crafts. I cross-stitch, I'm a scrapbooker, and I love any of the paper arts (rubber-stamping, altered books, etc.).

I guess I've bored you enough for now...I'm looking forward to popping my head in now and again and getting to know everyone.

Big hugs,

Michelle/Mishka Smiley

Hola all,

I thought I'd give a brief intro to get the ball rolling... so here's a little info to put with my name...

I’m a 40  something woman who lives in Colorado with her husband and two 60 lb standard  poodles. I quilt  and continually visualize  works of art too large to house and that are   way over my head on skill level needed to complete to match my vision.  My all time favorite novel is One Hundred Years of Solitude and I like Diana  Gabaldon’s Outlander series quite a bit .... In Tarot I loved Women of the  Golden Dawn, well, anything written by Mary Greer or Rachel Pollack.  But  I’ll read just about anything as we don’t have a tv and I’m a loser at cards.

I learned about the Tarot School on line through Tarot Tips and taking  many teleclasses.  I’m enrolled in the Correspondence course as well, but  rather than attempting to be the first to complete it, I seem to be working  toward being the last :-)

I discovered the Tarot when I found a tarot  deck and hundreds of notes about daily readings in the box that contained my  grandmother’s cookbooks.  Bless her heart she was a closet tarot reader.   There were notes throughout the cookbooks and on many, many scraps of  paper (laundry lists of chores, grocery lists and on the backs of hand written  recipes).  I was fascinated but didn’t pursue the cards until many years  later.  Then I read everything I could get my hands on.  It is a  slow, but marvelous process, getting to know this wicked pack of cards.   I’m still learning

My most used deck is the Universal Waite.   I also frequently use a deck that is symbols only, a prototype from  Leisa Refalo that is amazing.  (Hi Leisa!)   I have  lots of other decks  but since I’m so often at the feet of the Tarot School I’m most comfortable  with the Universal and Leisa’s deck.

Happy to be here, hope I can help the team,
ceal
